Congratulating Swe Win and supporting local journalists in Burma

OME congratulates the Burmese local journalist Swe Win for being named a recipient of the 2021 Shorenstein Journalism Award; as well as for recognition by the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center (APARC). In fact, Swe Win is supposed to receive the award in the fall quarter of the year 2021.

The Shorenstein award, presented annually by APARC, is granted to a journalist who has significantly contributed to a greater understanding of Asia through outstanding reporting on critical issues affecting the region.

In addition to that, the Shorenstein APARC Director, Gi-Wook Shon, highlighted Swe Win’s contributions in his comments; “His (Swe Win) work demonstrates the moral force of investigative, independent journalism to speak truth to power; and he now leads a resilient and a courageous fight for press freedom in the face of brutal attacks on democracy and liberty. It is our honor to recognize him with the Shorenstein Journalism Award.”

At OME we support local journalists and enable their efforts working in oppressive environments; undertaking like those spearheaded by Swe Win in Burma.
