Facebook Papers

by Majd Alamad

Before it was The Facebook Papers, it was The Facebook Files, a Wall Street Journal series that included the first looks at many of Frances Haugen’s documents (the former Facebook product manager-turned-whistleblower). The Facebook Papers represent a unique collaboration between multiple news organizations who worked together to gain access to thousands of pages of internal company documents obtained by Haugen. Among her most powerful accusations against Facebook are that the company has not just ignored but knowingly fanned the flames of violence and misinformation worldwide.

“The reason I wanted to do this project is because I think the global South is in danger,” she said.

Dozens of Internal documents written by Facebook employees offered plain evidence of one of the most severe criticisms raised by OME against this tech hegemon: that It operates outside the English-speaking world without fully grasping the effects it has on the country’s culture or politics. But most importantly, when these failures occur Facebook still decides not to deploy the resources needed to fix those issues.

As Facebook is changing its group’s name to Meta because it is nearing a reputational point of no return, risking to join the ranks of corporate untouchables like big tobacco, OME strongly condemns their policies of choosing profits over people and demands that more be done in regards to the fight against fake news and misinformation regardless of what they decide to call themselves.
